Custom AFOs and Ankle Braces in West Haven, CT

What is Custom AFOs and Ankle Braces

A custom ankle-foot orthosis (AFO) is a brace made to support the foot and ankle together. Dr. Sean Lazarus offers custom AFOs and ankle braces for patients whose mechanical instability needs more control than a shoe insert alone can provide.

How Custom AFO Evaluation and Fitting Works

This treatment is selected when the underlying mechanics, tissue damage, nerve function, or nail condition call for a more precise approach than generic care.

  • Podiatric evaluation

Dr. Lazarus reviews symptoms, prior injuries, footwear, activity needs and the way the foot and ankle function together.

  • Digital gait analysis

Pressure and movement information may help show where support or control is needed during standing and walking.

  • Brace selection

The brace design is chosen around the diagnosis, the amount of support needed, footwear and daily activities.

  • 3D scan

A 3D scan captures the shape of the patient's foot for the selected custom orthotic, AFO or brace.

  • Custom fabrication

The device is fabricated from the 3D scan and prescription selected after the evaluation.

  • Fitting and adjustment

The finished brace is checked with the patient’s foot, ankle, socks and appropriate footwear, then adjusted when needed.

  • Follow-up

Dr. Lazarus checks comfort, skin contact, shoe fit and function and discusses whether further adjustment is appropriate.

Custom Foot Orthotics

Some patients need support inside the shoe without an ankle component. Others need an AFO that controls both the foot and ankle. Dr. Lazarus explains which level of support fits the examination findings.

What is an ankle-foot orthosis?

An ankle-foot orthosis is a brace that extends across the ankle and along part of the foot. That design allows it to influence motion at more than one joint. A foot orthotic sits inside the shoe and primarily supports the foot. An AFO adds an ankle component when the examination shows that support limited to the foot may not be enough.

People sometimes use “ankle brace” as a broad term for many products. A custom AFO is different from a basic elastic sleeve or a brace purchased off the shelf. It is selected and made around the patient’s anatomy, mechanical findings, footwear and intended use. Custom does not automatically mean better for every person; it means the device is considered when an individualized level of control is appropriate.

When Dr. Lazarus may discuss custom bracing

A custom brace may be discussed when the foot or ankle repeatedly feels unstable, gives way or is difficult to control during walking. A history of repeated ankle sprains can change confidence as well as mechanics. Some people begin avoiding uneven ground, stairs or longer walks because they do not trust the ankle. The evaluation looks beyond the label “weak ankle” to understand what motion is occurring and where support may help.

Posterior tibial tendon problems, flatfoot-related instability and selected balance concerns may also lead to an evaluation for custom bracing. These terms cover different problems, so a brace should not be selected from symptoms alone. Dr. Lazarus examines alignment, motion, strength, footwear and gait before recommending a device.

Choosing the right amount of support

An off-the-shelf ankle brace can be useful when temporary or general support is appropriate. It comes in standard sizes and is not made from the individual patient’s measurements. A custom AFO is designed for a more specific mechanical goal. The shape, stiffness, trim lines and way it works with footwear are considered as part of the prescription.

More support is not always the goal. A brace needs to provide enough control without creating unnecessary bulk or limiting motion that the patient needs. Dr. Lazarus discusses where the device will be worn, the shoes that can accommodate it, work and activity demands, and any areas that are sensitive to pressure. The recommendation is based on those practical factors as well as the clinical examination.

How custom ankle braces work with custom foot orthotics

Custom foot orthotics and custom AFOs address different levels of support. An orthotic may help redistribute pressure and guide foot mechanics inside the shoe. An AFO adds control around the ankle. Some AFO designs include a custom foot section, so a separate orthotic may not be needed in the same shoe. In other situations, the overall plan may use different devices for different footwear or activities.

The best starting point is an evaluation rather than choosing a device by name. Dr. Lazarus can explain whether custom foot orthotics, a custom AFO, an off-the-shelf brace or another conservative approach fits the findings. Bring the shoes you use most often and any current braces or inserts so their fit and wear patterns can be reviewed.

Custom AFOs and Ankle Braces Questions Answered

AFO stands for ankle-foot orthosis. It is a brace that supports the foot and ankle together.

No. A foot orthotic sits inside the shoe and supports the foot. An AFO extends across the ankle to provide additional control when foot support alone may not be enough.

Yes. Dr. Lazarus offers the Richie Brace and determines whether it fits the patient’s mechanical needs after an evaluation.

Dr. Lazarus evaluates whether the Medial Blaze or another custom brace design is appropriate for the patient’s foot and ankle mechanics.

The process begins with an evaluation. A 3D scan captures the shape of the patient's foot, the selected AFO or brace is custom fabricated from the scan and prescription, and the finished device is fitted and adjusted in the office.

Shoe compatibility depends on the brace design. A stable shoe with enough room is often important. Bring commonly worn shoes to the evaluation so Dr. Lazarus can discuss practical fit.

No device can guarantee that an injury will not occur. A custom AFO may be considered to provide mechanical support when repeated sprains or instability are part of the examination findings.
